They think all homeless people are on drugs. Yeah, [I am offended]. There’s nothing there to help anyone that’s homeless. It’s just do it yourself or find your own way. One homeless man in Dublin yesterday, who did not wish to be namedA new initiative to encourage people to stop donating to those begging on the street began yesterday.

The campaign is run by the Dublin City Business Improvement District (BID) and the addiction charity Tiglin.

BID, a representative organisation for more than 2,500 businesses across the city, claims active street begging creates a perception that the city is unsafe.

Research conducted by Dublin City Council last year showed feeling unsafe was one of the most significant factors negatively influencing people’s experience of the city centre. The Change for the Better campaign is a “diverted giving” scheme, whereby people are urged to stop giving money to individuals begging on the street and to instead donate to one of 40 charity boxes in shops and businesses around the city.

Addiction issues

These funds go to Tiglin, which supports people with addiction issues. BID and a number of the businesses supporting the campaign have offered to match the donations made by the public through the boxes.

Chief executive Richard Guiney said active begging is “a serious problem” in the city centre. “There has been a stark increase in the number of active begging incidents recorded in the BID area over the past year.

“We know from consumer surveys that there is a perception that Dublin is not a safe city, when actually the statistics say it is extremely safe. About 60 per cent of all tourists will visit Dublin and this perception is very damaging.

“Previous research has shown that one of the main reasons for begging is to fund drug and alcohol addiction. We have observed cases of professional begging in the city and other situations where money given by the public has been used to buy drugs.”

Tiglin operations director Phil Thompson said the campaign was an educational process for both beggars and members of the public who give money.

Heroin addict

Niall Murphy (45) from Terenure, Dublin, is a former heroin addict who begged on the streets to fund his addiction but has completed Tiglin’s rehabilitation programme.

“There was a rave scene in Dublin during the nineties and I fell into that,” he said. “I started using ecstasy and progressed on to heroin. I was about 35 when I was kicked out and ended up homeless.

“I wasn’t your typical beggar sitting on a bridge with a cup, but I’m ashamed to say I used to walk around tapping people to see if they would give me money.

“Deep down, people knew if I asked for money for a hostel that I really wanted it for drugs.”

In-store cash-donation boxes aim to cut down street begging

Ed Carty – 31 January 2013

SHOP owners in Dublin are trying to reduce the amount of street begging by offering in-store dedicated donation points.

A group representing 2,500 businesses in the capital said problematic street begging, already illegal, had increased by 79pc in the last three months of the year.

Dublin’s Business Improvement District (Bid) claimed they are concerned that money given directly to people in need on the streets will not make much difference to their lives.

Richard Guiney, Bid chief executive, said it also gives a perception that the city is not safe.

“Giving change to someone begging on the street does nothing to alleviate genuine social problems,” he said.

The Bid campaign will see 40 donation boxes in selected shops with all money going to registered charity Tiglin, which rehabilitates addicts.

Niall Murphy, a former homeless drug user who completed the scheme, said his life began a second time with support from the charity in 2009.

He said: “Alcohol and heroin had me at death’s door many times and I couldn’t find a way out.

“My hope was lost. Suicidal thoughts and drug overdoses were a constant battle.

“I thank God that today I’m free and I’m no longer the person I used to be.”

Mr Murphy is now at college studying for a diploma, and is engaged to be married.

Bid warned about levels of organised begging and also supports calls for methadone clinics and treatment centres to be moved out of the city centre to prevent addicts and dealers congregating at some locations.

It identified restaurants, bars and side streets in the Grafton Street, Stephen’s Green and South William Street areas as begging blackspots, along with ATMs, parking meters and old, mainly defunct telephone boxes which addicts also use when injecting drugs.

Mr Guiney added: “The objective of this campaign is to reduce active street begging on our streets, while at the same time directing funds to a very worthy organisation which is making a real difference.”

Tough new laws outlawing aggressive begging came into force in February 2011.

Ashford’s Tiglin rehab centre raise over €47,000

By WicklowNews.net, Dec 7th 2012, 14:41

Tiglin Rehab Centre host their annual fundraising dinner raising over €47,000

Tiglin Rehab Centre hosted their annual fundraising dinner on Friday 30th November at The Radisson Blu in Stillorgan with former Chief Whip Pat Carey in attendance as guest speaker. A generous donation of €40,000 was presented by Bentley Systems International Limited to Tiglin on the night and an auction raised a further €7,000.

The connection between Tiglin and Bentley Systems came when a Tiglin graduate, Gavin, started doing voluntary work with them after he finished the course. He had studied architectural technology and wanted to do some drawings to help Tiglin expand their centre. He didn’t have the tools required and got in touch with Bentley Systems to see if they would sponsor Tiglin. As it turns out, Bentley Systems were looking to work alongside an Irish charity. The donation will go towards a complete renovation and insulation and 21 brand new computers plus software.
Manager of Tiglin Rehab Centre, Phil Thompson said, “We are so grateful to Bentley Systems for their very generous donation. It will help the students of Tiglin enormously to improve their education, training and personal development.”
Guests on the night were treated to a three course meal followed by an auction. Former Chief Whip Pat Carey was guest speaker on the night along with an ex-student of Tiglin.
Pat Carey said “Tiglin is best described as a sanctuary, a place you can go to, to clear your head. Where it is located gives you an extraordinary opportunity to find yourself. Alcohol is increasingly becoming the gateway drug. I believe in moving from dependence to independence and Tiglin and its philosophy is doing that as good as, if not better than most. I stand in admiration of the work they are doing.”

An inspiring story came from one ex-Tiglin graduate in particular. Karl, from Rathmines ended up in Tiglin. Karl didn’t feel accepted in school and from a young age started using low class drugs. By the age of 15 he was using heroin.

“A friend of mine asked me one day to go and meet with Tiglin representatives. There was no more running away. I had to accept what had happened to me and move on with my life. I went through the process at Tiglin and I am now in my final year of a four year apprenticeship. I never finished anything but finishing Tiglin was a sense of “I can do this”. It was breaking the mould of always giving up, always doing things and not seeing them through. It gave me a real sense of encouragement to go and finish things. Tiglin gave the courage to push through with my life and not turn back. There certainly is life beyond addiction,” said Karl.

Anyone wishing to donate to Tiglin can call 0404 40010 or log on to www.tiglin.ie and click on the donate button.

Tiglin first opened its doors in 2008, operating as a men-only centre. A large proportion of Tiglin’s residents have been homeless due to addiction problems. Tiglin is based near Ashford, Co. Wicklow
